Non-Profit Cleanup

Non-Profit Cleanup

When heavy rains caused water to come through the wall at a local nonprofit they called SERVPRO of Sangamon County to come out and take care of the cleanup.

Water had worn away at the mortar between the bricks and was coming through the foundation. A large portion of the building was affected by the flood waters. Once the problem was contained and eliminated by a water proofing company SERVPRO of Sangamon County came in and dried out the remaining structure.

If your home or business is affected by storm flooding, call the professionals to help you get it cleaned up at 217-528-7775

Sump pump problems

Sump pump problems

When storms carry heavy rains into an area for an extended period of time it can put a strain on your home's sump pump system.  In some cases the amount of water draining into the sump pit will overwhelm the pump causing the water to enter other areas of the basement.  In this case the sump was still in working condition but was unable to keep up with the volume of water.  In these cases it is sometimes best to wait for the incoming water to slow or place a secondary pump to help get the water out as quickly as possible.

Vent and Duct Cleaning after Fire Damage

Vent and Duct Cleaning after Fire Damage

It is incredible how much soot and smoke can get sucked in by a vent in a residential HVAC system during a fire.  Depending on the location of the opening in relation to the fire, a return can circulate the smoke throughout the house causing more damage.

For this reason a complete cleaning of the duct system is usually required to keep from recirculating airborne smoke and soot throughout the house. Generally a good indicator for if the system needs to be cleaned is by taking a look at the filter.

For duct cleaning after a fire, or anytime, call SERVPRO of Sangamon County at 217-528-7775

Slow Leaks

Slow Leaks

Slow leaks can sometimes be hard to catch.  Ongoing issues can sometimes lead to mold growth.

The recommended remediation process is to remove affected drywall and sometimes flooring before drying can begin. It is nearly impossible to clean the paper face of the affected drywall without destroying the material in the process.

In the case of this picture, a slow leaking washing machine caused mold to grow on the surrounding drywall.  Luckily these homeowners called us and we had it all cleaned up and drying out in no time.

If you have possible mold problems, call SERVPRO of Sangamon County today at 217-528-7775

Damp basements where little to no airflow is present can be an easy place for mold to take hold and thrive.  This basement was not dried out properly leading to residual moisture in the building material and mold contamination on not only the structure but also the contents nearby.

Wet flooring

Wet flooring

There are a lot of things to take into account when figuring out a plan for drying out a structure.  In this picture the flooring was saturated enough that the adhesive that kept it in place had released and caused the tiles to move around.  In this case usually all of the continuous flooring will have to be replaced in order to make sure the floor is restored to its original state.

Wet Laminate

Wet Laminate

Laminate flooring usually doesn't fare very well when it gets wet.  This picture shows how the seams can swell and become very uneven when water soaks underneath it.

Usually the affected flooring will have to be removed and replaced after drying is complete.

Call SERVPRO of Sangamon County if you have a water damage that affects your flooring.

Mold Remediation

Mold can come in all different colors.  The first key is to make sure that whatever the original problem that was the root cause for the growth in the first place is fixed. Without fixing the problem, no amount of cleaning will ensure that the issue won't reoccur.

Advancement in drying technology

Advancement in drying technology

While there are many methods for drying structural components and contents, the “in-place” drying system has been taught in the industry and used by drying contractors since the early ’80s. In those days, this method of drying components, without significant removal of furnishings or fixtures, was somewhat restricted, due to limitations imposed by extraction, evaporation and dehumidification equipment. In recent years, however, drying technology (extraction, evaporation, dehumidification), along with better understanding of psychrometry, has advanced in major ways so that in-place drying has, in some cases, become far more safe and practical.

Sump pump failures during storms

Sump pump failures during storms

Sump pump failures can cause flooding in your basement when water tables rise and cause pumps to continuously run for extended periods of time.  Some general tips on how to mitigate damage BEFORE the sump actually fails.

  • keep items in plastic totes in order to keep water out
  • keep fabric items and clothing up off the floor on palettes or shelving units
  • check your sump pump to make sure it is working often and make sure the float that activates the pump moves freely

Call SERVPRO if your pump does fail at 217-528-7775

Heavy storms cause water to run through window wells

Heavy storms cause water to run through window wells

This picture shows what can happen when heavy rains enter a basement or crawlspace through a window well. In order to prevent this water from entering a basement and preventing this problem altogether there are two main components.

The first is to ensure that every window well has a drain. This can prevent the water from collecting in the bottom and coming through the window itself.

The second is to ensure the window has a proper cover to prevent debris from entering the well and clogging the drain.

Containment

Containment

When this department store had a sprinkler head leak in the store above it they called SERVPRO of Sangamon County to dry it up.

Upon arrival it was clear that the area needed to be closed off in order to target the drying needs to the specific area that was affected by the water.

When the affected area has a lot of cubic feet to dehumidify we like to use containment to shrink the area to make the drying environment more efficient and precise.

Bathroom Ventilation

Bathroom Ventilation

Excess moisture has tremendous potential for damaging bathrooms. During a bath or shower, humidity levels rise significantly creating the perfect breeding ground for mold, mildew and microorganisms that can negatively impact health. In addition, long-term exposure to excess moisture and humidity can crack and peel paint and wallpaper, ruin wallboard, warp doors and rust cabinets and fixtures. Without control, it can even cause deterioration of joists and framing above the bathroom.

Most of today's new homes are highly insulated and practically air tight, saving energy but making proper mechanical ventilation essential to maintaining good indoor air quality. Good ventilation protects both your health and your home and is especially important in bathrooms which experience high levels of moisture and humidity.

Dangers of Burning Candles

Dangers of Burning Candles

This fire was caused from leaving a candle burning and unattended.

When using candles, we all should practice the following safety tips:

  • Always keep matches, lighters, and candles away from children.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Keep combustible materials far away from candles.
  • Do not put candles in a location where children or pets could knock them over. Be aware that candles and rambunctious puppies don’t mix.
  • Use only nonflammable candleholders that are sturdy and hard to tip over.
  • Always trim the wicks before lighting.
  • Do not burn a candle all the way down to where it is too close to the holder or container.
  • Use flashlights rather than candles when you have a power outage.
